Life School, a leading North Texas public charter school serving over 5,600 students, held its fifth annual Elementary Science Fair at the Life School Red Oak campus Friday, February 7th.  Sixty students in grades 3rd - 6th from Life School’s six elementary campuses competed at the district level after placing in the top three at their campus-based competition.

Each student at these grade levels were able to present a science project of their choosing based on predefined criteria, while allowing them to use their own creativity to develop their individualized project as part of this hands-on learning experience.

New STEM Challenge
Added just this year, 6th grade students worked in collaborative teams to solve a Rube Goldberg STEM challenge that focused on energy transformations. The students used the engineering design process to think critically as they developed a machine that would successfully push or pull a Jenga block from a tower. A team of boys from Life School Cedar Hill took top honors in this category.

In addition to the project presentations, students also had the opportunity to participate in STEM-based activities presented by the Perot Museum, including a STEM Bridge Challenge, Bloxels and Coding and extracting DNA from a strawberry!

Judges for the event were made up of community volunteers.  Organizations represented were the Dallas Regional Chamber of Commerce, Methodist Healthcare System, the Waxahachie Chamber, Lancaster Police Department, the Waxahachie Daily Light and the Waxahachie Sun.

Winners from each grade level include:

3rd grade - Dallas Montgomer, Life School Cedar Hill

4th grade - Serenity Pickett, Life School Mountain Creek

5th grade - Xiromi Serrano,  Life School Mountain Creek

6th Grade - Ja’Darion James, Wesley Keriuki, Gaberiel McMillan, Life School Cedar Hill
