The Canterbury Episcopal School’s Youth and Government team recently traveled to our state’s capital in Austin to attend the YMCA’s annual Junior Youth and Government State Conference.  Over 500 students from around the state gathered at the capital to participate.  The two day conference was comprised of both committee and joint session opportunities for delegates to present and defend their bills in hopes of someday turning them into law.

 Students had the honor of actually presenting their bills on the floor of both the capital’s house and senate headquarters.  While using parliamentary procedure, pro/con persuasive writing and speaking techniques, and debating skills, students were able to experience first-hand how our government and legal system actually work.  With topics ranging from education reform to creating more eco-friendly building incentives, students demonstrated a vast understanding and passion for changing and improving the future of our state and nation.

Canterbury 7^th grader, Jonathan Jamison was elected Lieutenant Governor for next year’s conference, and 7^th Grader, Klayton Williams was named Distinguished Delegate for his performance in the Duran House of Representatives.  Canterbury’s team was also given the honor of being named Premier Delegation for the fourth year in a row. 

Canterbury Episcopal is proud to join with the YMCA to offer this worthwhile and life-changing program to their students.  Former students who have participated in the Youth and Government program went on to become CEOs, senators, mayors, governors and other elected officials who are passionate about servant leadership and civic involvement.
