Fans Designed the New Dallas Mavericks Court — Here’s How It Was Done

Fans were recently given a chance to help design the new Dallas Mavericks Basketball court for the 2016-2017 NBA season. Dallas Mavericks Owner Mark Cuban said, “Crowdsourcing our new court design is the best way to get a wide variety of creative and unique options from our fans.”

The deadline was March 11, 2016, but according to Erin Finegold, Dallas Mavericks Director of Corporate Communications and Events, the finalists have still not been announced.

The contest began at the end of February with fans encouraged to get involved by using PowerPoint, Illustrator or Photoshop to create their own versions and upload their design to Facebook, Twitter or Instagram and tag the image with #MavsNewCourt.

From there, a panel of Maverick’s judges including owner Mark Cuban, as well as COO, Floyd Jahner; VP of Operations, Steve Letson; Creative Director, Matt Hoffer; Broadcast Producer, Fox Sports Southwest, Dave Keeny; and Billy the Kidd, KISS FM DJ and Mavs SuperFan, chose the top three designs.

The results will soon be posted to Mavs.com/mavsnewcourt so that fans can vote on their favorite design.

The winning court design will be unveiled on the jumbotron at American Airlines Center during the Mavericks' final regular season home game, Fan Appreciation Night, on Wednesday, April 13, 2016.

It was Cuban who came up with the idea. Finegold explained, “Generally, the judges are looking for a court that moves the brand forward, uses the Mavs colors and themes in a creative way, and looks cohesive and clean.”

There were more than 580 designs sent in by the deadline date. Finegold said, “Obviously Mark is going to look for the courts that stand out, our creative director is making sure that were sticking to our brand guidelines and Dave Keeny wants to make sure the floor is going to look good on the TV broadcast for all to see.”

The creator of the winning design will win two season tickets for the Mavs’ 2016-17 season and will be recognized on court on opening night of the Mavs’ 2016-2017 season.

“We love when fans can get involved and participate in contests and our social media sites,” Finegold concluded. “We enjoy hearing their feedback and ideas and take it to heart.”

The new court design will definitely be used for a couple of years, but Finegold also added that there is no set time frame as to how long the new court design will actually be used beyond that.
