Life School, a leading North Texas public charter school serving over 5,600 students, held its fifth annual Elementary Science Fair at the Life School Red Oak campus Friday, February 7th.  Sixty students in grades 3rd - 6th from Life School’s six elementary campuses competed at the district level after placing in the top three at their campus-based competition.

Each student at these grade levels were able to present a science project of their choosing based on predefined criteria, while allowing them to use their own creativity to develop their individualized project as part of this hands-on learning experience.

New STEM Challenge
Added just this year, 6th grade students worked in collaborative teams to solve a Rube Goldberg STEM challenge that focused on energy transformations. The students used the engineering design process to think critically as they developed a machine that would successfully push or pull a Jenga block from a tower. A team of boys from Life School Cedar Hill took top honors in this category.

In addition to the project presentations, students also had the opportunity to participate in STEM-based activities presented by the Perot Museum, including a STEM Bridge Challenge, Bloxels and Coding and extracting DNA from a strawberry!

Judges for the event were made up of community volunteers.  Organizations represented were the Dallas Regional Chamber of Commerce, Methodist Healthcare System, the Waxahachie Chamber, Lancaster Police Department, the Waxahachie Daily Light and the Waxahachie Sun.

Winners from each grade level include:

3rd grade - Dallas Montgomer, Life School Cedar Hill

4th grade - Serenity Pickett, Life School Mountain Creek

5th grade - Xiromi Serrano,  Life School Mountain Creek

6th Grade - Ja’Darion James, Wesley Keriuki, Gaberiel McMillan, Life School Cedar Hill

Life High School Oak Cliff competed in its very first University Interscholastic League (UIL) Cross-Examination (CX) debate tournament on January 16 at Brookhaven College. Not only was it the school’s first debate tournament – but the team did so well in its inaugural UIL competition that they qualified for the state UIL debate tournament that will be held March 16-17 in Austin at The University of Texas at Austin.

“The district tournament was the first competition we have ever competed in,” said Alissa Russell, mathematics department head and debate team sponsor at Life High School Oak Cliff. “We really went to learn the ropes and be better prepared for next year. I am excited for our team and the final results. We are looking forward to the state competition.”

The Life High School Oak Cliff debate team consists of four students, including three seniors: Adaryah Kidd, Carlos Perez and Danyelle Williams; and one sophomore, Vanessa Ramirez.

“UIL debate competition motivates students and provides them with practical application for the skills they are developing,” said Jana Riggins, UIL State Debate Director. “This year’s debate topic prompted students to research and form their own thoughts and opinions on the real-world issue our government is challenged with: Resolved: The United States federal government should substantially reduce Direct Commercial Sales and/or Foreign Military Sales of arms from the United States.”

Students who advance to the debate elimination rounds in the state competition qualify for Texas Interscholastic League Foundation (TILF) scholarships. Since its inception in 1959, the TILF has provided more than $32 million to more than 20,000 students. Amounts of scholarships range from $500 for one year to $20,000 over four years. This year TILF will disperse more than $1 million to more than 600 students.

Life High School Waxahachie Names New Head Football Coach

Former Interim Head Coach Micah Stanley Taking the Reins of the Mustangs

Life High School Waxahachie announced today Micah Stanley will serve as its new head football coach. Coach Stanley has been with Life High School Waxahachie for six years serving as the team’s Offensive Coordinator for the previous four seasons. During the 2018 football season, Coach Stanley filled in as interim head coach while then head coach Heath Blalock was serving in the military overseas.

“While Coach Stanley was the interim football coach, I was able to see firsthand the positive culture he instilled with the program and that the staff rallied around him,” said Scott Thrush, Director of Athletics for Life School. “The passion, energy and enthusiasm he brings is contagious. He has a true heart for our student-athletes and uses the game of football to prepare our young men for LIFE.”

Coach Stanley will take the reins as the head coach of the successful football program after Coach Blalock resigned to pursue new opportunities.

“We are grateful for Coach Blalock’s many years of service not only to our students and district, but also to his country. As a member of the United States Armed Forces, Coach Blalock has been a leading example of citizenship to our students, staff and families. We want to thank Coach Blalock for a successful football season and wish him the best in his future endeavors," continued Scott Thrush.

Coach Stanley is in his sixth year at Life School as a football coach and teacher. An educator for nine years, Coach Stanley worked in public schools in Winona and Frost before coming to Life School. His wife Jillian is also a member of the Life School family, working as an elementary math curriculum coordinator for the district. A native of Stamford, Texas, Coach Stanley graduated from Hardin-Simmons University with a Bachelor’s of Behavioral Science in Physical Education. He is a member of the Texas High School Coaches Association and ATPE.

Jillian and I are excited to continue working with these great young men, coaches, teachers, administrators, parents and the rest of the Life School family. Our goals will always include winning on the field, but more importantly we want to build young men of great character who are ready to conquer Life after Life. We want to thank everyone who made this dream become a reality and look forward to getting to work. Go Mustangs!” said Coach Stanley.

Life School Waxahachie competes as a UIL 4A Division I school. In 2019, the Mustangs finished 7-4 and third in the divisional standings and made the playoffs. Life School will also hire a new offensive coordinator. For more information and to apply at Life School, please visit the Life School website at lifeschools.net.

The Arredondos recently donated 1,300 books to Life School Mountain Creek Elementary School.

Kate’s Books Donates 1,300+ Books to Life School Mountain Creek

Books will help spread literacy in the community and help children develop a love of reading.

Life School Mountain Creek, a public charter elementary school located in southern Dallas, recently received a donation of more than 1,300 new and gently used books from Kate’s Books that will be used to enhance the school’s library.

“We are so grateful to Kate’s Books for this generous donation to our school library,” says Eva Mease, Life School Mountain Creek Principal. “Life School Mountain Creek is strategically focused on literacy as it is a key indicator of student success. We are thrilled to provide more opportunities for our students to develop a love of reading.”

Born out of a desire to gift children with books and toys at Christmas, Kate's Books was founded in April 2016 by an 8-year old girl with a big vision. Kate, a daughter of two Dallas police officers, has been active in Santa Cops since she was an infant. After noticing that plenty of toys were given away, but no books, Kate had the idea to include books in Santa Cops’ deliveries. Since many kids in underserved neighborhoods do not have access to libraries, these donations are a great way to get books into the hands of those that need them most. Kate’s Books has expanded beyond the holidays and now makes donations to partners like Life School Mountain Creek throughout the year.

“We learned about Life School through a word-of-mouth reference. Luckily, we have never had to turn away a request for books,” said Kate’s mom Angela Arredondo. “We store the books we receive in our garage and storage sheds, and books are always coming in and going out! My husband and I are both Dallas police officers with more than 20 years of experience. Our daughter, Kate, is now 12-years old and in 6th grade.”

Life School Mountain Creek is one of 10 schools that make up Life School, a public-charter school district with more than 20 years of experience educating students in the Dallas area. For more information about Life School Mountain Creek, visit www.learnaboutlifeschool.net.

Life School Charter District Expands to Carrollton with Addition of Elementary Campus

One of DFW’s Original Charter School Districts Opens K-5 School in Carrollton

Life School Carrollton Elementary opened this fall in Carrollton, making it the first campus of the Life School Charter District located in the North Dallas area. Life School Carrollton is the 10th campus for the 20-plus-year Life School District, which includes six elementary schools, two middle schools, and a 3A and 4A high school.

“We are proud to be a part of the Carrollton community, a community that places a high value on growth not only economically but in serving the people who live here,” said Life School Superintendent Brent Wilson of the district’s expansion into this new area. “We look forward to getting to know our new families and neighbors and working in partnership together to help our students become leaders with strong character and heart who will go on to do great things in life.”

Life School Carrollton, which is located on the Covenant Church campus on Trinity Mills, is an open-enrollment public charter school for students in kindergarten through 5th grade. In addition to Carrollton, Life School has campuses in Oak Cliff, Dallas, Cedar Hill, Lancaster, Red Oak and Waxahachie.

“Life School Carrollton is a great addition to the Carrollton community,” said Carrollton Mayor Kevin Falconer of the newest Life School in a statement prior to the event. “We are excited to have another school with a strong track record of success as part of Carrollton’s many outstanding educational offerings for our families.”

Councilmember Glen Blanscet, who attended the event along with fellow councilmember Mike Hennefer, agreed with the mayor’s sentiments. “We are grateful that Life School has joined our community,” he said during his remarks at the ribbon-cutting. “It’s a great partnership and it’s a great fit for a church like Covenant Church which is such a major part of our community as well. This just enhances the work that can happen on this property and we’re excited that you’re here. Thank you for being a part of Carrollton.”

Life School Carrollton Principal Jennifer Villavaso – who has 14 years of experience in education, including 10 years in Carrollton – is excited to be part to the Carrollton community. “It has been an absolute honor in serving this community that has been so welcoming and generous to us,” she said.

Life School’s Strategy for Success: Preparing Students for the Rest of Their Lives

Charter District Prioritizes Academic Excellence and College, Career & Military Readiness

In 2020, more than 60% of Texas jobs will require some college education (a Certificate, 2-Year Associates, or a Bachelor’s Degree) but unfortunately, today less than 30% of Texas high school graduates earn a post-high school credential within six years of graduation. Life School – a Dallas-area public charter school district with 10 schools including six elementary schools, two middle schools and two high schools – is making strides to overcome this challenge through academic excellence, leadership training and a focus on College, Career and Military Readiness (CCMR).

“As educators, our main job is to prepare our students for their future lives so they are successful in whatever they choose to be or do,” said Life School Superintendent Dr. Brent Wilson. ““With a mission to develop leaders with life skills through strong academics, character training, and partnerships with parents and the community, it is our duty to prepare our students for the next step in life so they are successful whether they choose to go directly into the workforce, join the military or work toward a degree at a 2-or-4-year college.”

District outcomes show the efforts are working. Life School, which serves the communities of Carrollton, Dallas, Cedar Hill, Lancaster, Red Oak and Waxahachie, recently received an overall B rating in the Texas Education Agency (TEA) Accountability Ratings System and an A for its College, Career and Military Readiness program. Perhaps most importantly, both Life High Schools have a 100% high school graduation rate.

Research shows that a primary part of being prepared for what comes next is being able to read at grade level by third grade. Life School takes this research to heart as evidenced by its strategic goal that, when met, will ensure all students are reading on grade level by the time they reach third grade.  Training resources through the Teachers College at Columbia University, along with increased access to books and reading programs for students will help Life School students meet this important milestone.

Hand-in-hand with academics, an important part of the education Life School provides is character training through its LifeLeader program.  Developed based on more than 20 years of practical research, observation and experience, Life School teaches 15 attributes that represent skills or knowledge necessary to be an effective leader. These attributes include qualities to ensure that all Life School’s students are ready to learn, ready to lead and ready for life.

Armed with this strong foundation, Life School students are able to explore what the future holds through its top-rated College, Career and Military Readiness program. Thanks to CCMR, in 2019, 22 Life School students received their Associate degree along with their high school diploma and 55 medical certifications were awarded to graduating seniors.

Life School CCMR coordinator Leigh Dopson develops the CCMR curriculum and provides support to the educators leading the CCMR program, ensuring they have the resources needed to help students achieve their goals. This includes equipment for Career and Technical Education (CTE) classes like Health Science, Audio/Visual, Education Training, Business, Information Technology and STEM. CTE classes provide hands-on and technology-based activities and are designed to help students evaluate individual interests and abilities and begin exploring related career opportunities while also building skills. By taking CTE classes in high school, students can then earn certifications to start their career upon graduation.

“With CTE we are getting them ready for their careers,” said Dopson, who has been at Life School for six years. “We are exposing them to the expectations they are going to find in the real world.”

Dopson notes that Life School is unique because it pays for certification exams, equipment and resources. “Removing this financial barrier makes it easier for our students to complete the necessary certifications to become employable in the workforce.”

The Oak Cliff Chamber of Commerce recently named Life High School Oak Cliff teacher Dr. Alissa Russell its 2016 High School Educator of the Year during a ceremony at Dallas City Hall on April 14.

“I have had the privilege and pleasure of working alongside Dr. Russell at Oak Cliff Secondary and I can honestly say that I have met few people as uniquely talented in teaching as Dr. Russell,” says Elmer Avellaneda, the school’s principal. “Dr. Russell has been a positive influence to many of our students at our Oak Cliff Secondary campus. In all the time I have known her she has excelled in demonstrating character, creativity, and has communicated effectively as a visionary leader.”

Dr. Russell, a secondary school teacher at Life School Oak Cliff since 2009, is known for her commitment to her students and the energy and responsibility she brings to her work. In 2015, her students achieved 100% passing rate on the TAKS and STAAR, and she was in turn named Life School District Secondary Teacher of the Year.

“I have seen many students return to the school just to let Mrs. Russell know that her refusing to give up on them has made a big difference in their life and encouraged them to continue their education,” says Avellaneda. “Her doctoral project was to develop a Parental Learning Community (PLC) to increase parent participation in the educational process and has been used by many education experts as a guiding tool for implementation of PLCs.”
