Canterbury fifth graders participated in a Grant Writing Project before Christmas.  Students were asked to research a non-profit organization that interested them and then write a persuasive letter to a real philanthropic executive in New York who would read the letters and decide which student exemplified all project objectives.
The objectives were the following:
  • Explore and understand the power of the written word
  • Enhance and reinforce research skills needed for a lifetime of learning.
  • Find and expand writer’s voice and use that voice to persuade others to help those in need.
  • Expand understanding of proper business letter formats and appropriate verbiage used in writing persuasive documents to professionals in the field of philanthropy
  • Empower yourself and others through knowledge, awareness and sacrificial giving
  • Make predictions about potential outcomes
The letter that was chosen was written by our very own student on behalf of the Horned Lizard Conservation Society.  The president of the organization has been contacted and a donation in honor of our CES student's hard work will be sent to HLCS.  We are so proud of all our philanthropically-minded 5th graders.

The Canterbury Episcopal School's Youth & Government Team attended the District 5 Conference on November 19 at Duncanville High School. Four of our Twelve member team received Distinguished Delegate, which is the 1st place/highest scoring delegate in his/her committee. Of the five sixth grade awards given at this conference, Canterbury received four of them! All of our delegates ranked in the top four in their committee. The additional work and dedication is evident in each Canterbury team member and all those who participated.  Our team will compete in early March at the State Conference at the State Capital in Austin.

At our Open House, you will meet staff, teachers, parents and students of Canterbury who will welcome and tour each family through our 32 acre campus to showcase what our school has to offer.  With this array of perspectives, families will witness the community and partnership each family has with one another.  If you would like to RSVP to our Open House this Sunday or you want to know more about Canterbury Episcopal School, please contact Elizabeth Charles, Admissions and Marketing Director, at CharlesE@TheCanterburySchool.org or 469-759-2606.

The Canterbury Episcopal School’s annual Cougar Cub Adoption Ceremony kicked off this year’s special program.  Each Kindergarten child adopted a senior this year by both signing a special certificate during Eucharist this past Thursday.  Followed by the Adoption, our Cougar Cub Club fellowshipped with their new friends with making a craft and munching on Cougar cookies.

This adoption is the beginning of a very interactive, influential relationship between our Seniors and Kindergarteners.  They will be partaking in many more activities throughout the year including gingerbread house decorating, Eucharist buddy bonding, and popsicles in the park.  Both the Seniors and the Kindergarteners started this year as students going to the same school, but will finish it with a sibling-like love for one another that can last a lifetime.

On Sunday, Oct. 2, churches around the world will celebrate something that St. Francis of Assisi started almost 800 years ago- blessing our animals.  The animals of God’s creation inhabit the skies, the earth, and the sea. They share in the ways of human beings. They have a part in our lives. Francis of Assisi recognized this when he called the animals, wild and tame, his brothers and sisters.

Remembering Francis’ love for these brothers and sisters of ours, we invoke God’s blessing on these animals, and we thank God for letting us share the earth with all the creatures.

The Canterbury Episcopal School is celebrating Blessing of the Animals this Thursday, September 29th at 8:00 AM.  This annual tradition will take place across the Lower School building in the spare lot.  Just like the years past, we invite families to bring their pet or animals they would like to take part in the blessing to school that morning.  Because the service takes place at 8:00 AM, we ask all parents bring their pet home directly after.  As we know, many parents are unable to attend Blessing of the Animals, so we invite our Canterbury students to bring a stuffed pet or photo to be blessed in the place of the real pet.  We would love for as many families that can to join us at this fun, meaningful service to give these ‘friends’ a blessing for this next year.

CES Track

The Canterbury Episcopal boys and girls varsity track teams competed at a very high level in their district track meet this week at Mansfield High School. The girls won the district championship, while the boys finished as the district runner up.  Both teams consistently have great athletes who can accumulate a large number of points for the team, but this year they have that plus more.

To win district, the athletes compete based on a point system, and points are accumulated by finishing within the top eight places.  There were numerous Cougars who finished in the top eight, but here is a small list of only athletes who medaled (top three). For our boys, senior Zachary Rufus, who is defending champ in the 100m and 200m, received gold in the 100m, 200m, long jump, triple jump, and was the anchor leg on the gold medal winning 4x100m relay.  Senior Paraksh Vankawala, defending state champion in the high jump, won gold in the high jump, silver in the 400m, and bronze in the triple jump.  Paraksh was also a member of the gold medal winning 4X100m relay, along with senior Donovan Jones and junior Derrick Neal.  Derrick Neal won gold in the 300m hurdles and bronze in the long jump.

The girl’s team had a solid number of medalists as well.  Senior Timon Brown won gold in the long jump, 4x100m relay, 4x200m relay, and attained bronze finishes in the 400m and high jump.  Junior Triniti Lemmons won gold in the triple jump, grabbed silver in the 300m hurdles and high jump, and was also on the gold medal winning 4x100m and 4x200m relays with sophomores Rainelle Nevers and Kacidy Sheppard.  Rainelle Nevers also snatched silver in the 200m. Sophomore Peyton Jones dominated both throwing events with gold medal performances in the shot put and discus.  We close out our medal count with freshmen Lauren Westley. Lauren added a silver medal finish in the discus and bronze in the shot put.

This level of depth increases the Canterbury Cougars chances of having extremely strong finishes at the upcoming regional and state meets.  To qualify for regionals, athletes must finish in the top four, and for state, athletes must finish top four in their event at districts.  The Cougars are no stranger to the opportunities that are ahead for them.  For the past three years, the girls have finished the season as either the state champion or state runner up.  The boys’ team is now in the process of laying the foundation for their own dynasty.  Congrats again to the boys and girls varsity track teams for their awesome finish at district.  Good luck at districts next week!

The Dallas Metropolitan YMCA awarded Canterbury's very own Pritul Sarker this evening at their annual awards banquet. He was nominated along with many other Dallas youth leaders but won based on his tireless volunteer work with Canterbury's middle school Youth & Government team. Pritul and his parents were in attendance to receive this very prestigious honor.

The YMCA Youth Character Award honors worthy young people who embody the four YMCA core values: honesty, respect, responsibility, and caring. The award is to recognize those whose lives and achievements demonstrate an enduring commitment to qualities associated with good character.

Pritul is a 9th grader at Canterbury Episcopal School. He participated in Junior Youth and Government for three years, winning Distinguished Delegate and serving on the Governor's Cabinet.  Pritul has volunteered countless hours of his very busy schedule to our JYG team this year. Not only has he mentored our young students with his knowledge and experience, but he has volunteered at both our District Conference and at our state conference. Pritul is truly a selfless, giving, and dedicated young man who sees the immense value in the YMCA, Youth & Government, and doing everything in his power to make the future of his school, his state, and our nation brighter through his hard work and sacrifice to those around him and his community.
